Demolition of Old Jail is Underway

Crews have begun the months-long task of demolishing the old Regional Correctional Center at Fifth and Roma.

Crews are currently working inside the building to remove old fixtures and other items that can either be recycled or, for safety reasons, should be removed before the building is demolished.   The removal of the structure will utilize a controlled, non-explosive process.

Removal of the building was awarded to Guzman Construction Solutions, LLC in January.

The decision to raze the building was based on Bernalillo County Fleet and Facilities Department evaluations, the costs of renovation, updates to building systems, and repurposing of the facility were not feasible due to the building’s age and condition.

“It’s been a long time coming for the county to move on from the old Regional Correctional Center,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca.  “Without a clear productive use for the facility and the county’s need for another use for the land with the new Bernalillo County at Alvarado Square building about to open, this is just the right thing to do.”

Once the building is removed, the lot will be leveled and approximately 150 parking spaces will be created and used for county fleet vehicles until such a time that a higher and better use for vacant land in the urban core is a viable option.

Demolition and creation of the parking area is expected to take roughly 10 months at a cost of about $2.4 million.
