Community Services

The Bernalillo County Office of Senior and Social Services (OSSS) provides health and quality of life initiatives for Bernalillo County residents to improve economic well-being, education, health, and family and community development.

Its role in senior services includes program development for four county owned senior centers operated by the City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs. Senior services conducted by OSSS include implementing exercise programs, book clubs, music and art programs, sewing, crafts, ceramics and a variety of other activities. Program staff help serve breakfasts at centers and assist city staff with other planned activities. In addition, OSSS is actively involved in addressing food insecurity, transportation barriers, and social isolation of seniors in the community. OSSS promotes activities and the availability of free lunch to seniors 60 and over at senior centers throughout Bernalillo County.

Online Phone Conversations, Classes and Support Groups Available

Bernalillo County Office of Senior and Social Services is pleased to support the mission of Well Connected, a community service of Covia. Well Connected offers virtual programs to adults age 60 and over. Staying connected is more important then ever for individuals homebound, isolated, and advised to social distance. Social connections remain vital for the well-being of older adults and alternative ways of making connections with others is still viable. Well Connected offers phone and online group conversations, classes, support groups, lectures and much more. Participants can talk, play a game, learn a language, share a gratitude, get support, but more importantly connect and stay engaged. Services are free.

Call Well Connected at 1-877-797-7299 or visit www.covia.org to learn more. Download the current catalog to see course offerings. Participants receive a course catalog every trimester of new program offerings, and a Spanish catalog is also available. Also mention Social Call which is a service which will schedule regular one-on-one friendly calls to you or your loved one or visit Well Connected at the address above.

Teeniors Tech Camp

On Aug. 9, 2018, the Office of Senior and Social Services hosted a Tech Camp at the Paradise Hills Senior Center. At this event Teeniors were paired with seniors to help with tech questions. The Teeniors helped seniors navigate their tablets, smart phones, and computers. Some seniors wanted help taking photos and sending them to loved ones, others with email, or just understanding their devices. It was a great event and very well received! Please check out some photos from the event below.

  • Join us May 21 - July 31 for a taste of local history through the outdoor exhibit along the agricultural fields on the grounds of Gutiérrez Hubbell House History & Cultural Center, a Bernalillo County Open Space located at 6029 Isleta Blvd SW. The exhibit invites visitors to explore the varied origins and paths to New Mexico of key elements in our local foods. We’ll examine Pueblo agricultural trade and innovation, the impact of Spanish colonization on local crops and foods, and the influence of changing technology on what ingredients are available to New Mexicans. The exhibit tells the story of how generations of farmers and cooks adopted, adapted, and embraced foods from around the globe to create the unique and recognizable flavors that New Mexicans treasure as our local culinary traditions. The exhibit is located outdoors along the agricultural fields, with ample spacing. Downloadable and print guides for self-led tours will be available for those who wish to explore the exhibit alone or with a small group. On-site parking is available dawn-to-dusk, 7 days a week. Check online for updates about free reservations for guided tours of the exhibit and Gutiérrez Hubbell House.
