Project Background
•    Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square, 415 Silver Avenue SW 87102, is an eight-story building centrally located in downtown Albuquerque. Alvarado Square will house approximately 900 county employees and the County Commission chambers. The Alvarado Square chambers mural will be located inside the building on the south-facing wall of the new commission chambers. The mural will be visible to the public both from inside the building and outside from Silver Avenue through glass windows. The established budget is $75,000.
•    In June 2020, the Bernalillo County Arts Board solicited artists nationwide for the mural project. The county received over 70 proposals.
•    A selection committee made up of Arts Board members, community members, employees of Bernalillo County and other stakeholders was formed in August 2020 to review the proposals submitted and select the top three proposals.
•    The selection committee then picked the top three proposals and the county’s Arts Board voted to approve the finalists during the December 2020 Arts Board meeting.
•    The three finalists were invited to present their proposals to the Arts Board and selection committee on May 10, 2021. The public was also invited to attend the presentations. Based on the presentations and public comment, the Arts Board will select a finalist.
•    The winning artist or team will be tasked with creating the concept and design of the mural, engaging the community in the mural design and content, and implementing the installation of the mural.
•    The mural is expected to be completed in 2022.

Desired Outcome and Goals
The goal of the project is to create a mural that will serve as an iconic landmark that identifies Bernalillo County to passersby and that will provide a welcoming environment to the customers who visit Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square and county employees who work in the building. The mural will be culturally relevant and represent Bernalillo County.

•    Site Considerations: The mural will be located inside the building on the south-facing wall outside of the County Commission chambers. The mural will be visible to the public both from inside the building and outside from Silver Avenue through glass windows.  The artist will make full use of the space and the views from both inside and outside the building.
•    Project Aesthetics: The mural should be culturally sensitive and consider the diverse cultures and landscapes of Bernalillo County, New Mexico. While the mural does not need to follow the exact color scheme of the building, the artist should take into consideration the color palette/pantone of the interior walls of the building.
