Bernalillo County Dedicates New Public Art Sculpture

11/13/2018

Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada and the Bernalillo County Arts Board invite the public to the dedication and ribbon-cutting of “Vecinos,” a sculpture by Mark Horst and Working Classroom, Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, 100 Isleta SW.

Lead artist, Mark Horst and students from Working Classroom interviewed over 100 South Valley residents about what they love about the South Valley. The participants were photographed and their interviews were recorded.

“This sculpture features the faces of 10 South Valley residents who will now become a part of the South Valley’s history,” says County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada. “Thanks to Mark Horst and Working Classroom for bringing the love of the South Valley to life in this great art piece.”

The profiles of the 10 participants featured in the sculpture will be repainted in a different color scheme up to twice a year.

In addition to the permanent sculpture, there will be a temporary wheat paste mural/photo grid of photos of all 104 participants.

Vecinos means neighbors in English.
