BCFD Training TowerThe Bernalillo County Fire Cadet Academy is approximately 26 weeks from initial applicant testing to cadet graduation.

If selected, the academy lasts approximately 18 weeks. During the academy the cadets will be required to work Monday through Thursday and will report to the Training Academy between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Each cadet will participate in arduous physical training, classroom work, hands on skill training, homework, quizzes and tests. All curriculum exceeds the International Fire Service Accreditation  Congress’s Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II certification requirements. All cadets that graduate will be issued an IFSAC certification from the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy (NMFTA).

After graduation, a cadet is listed as a probationary firefighter and will be placed on a twenty-four hour assigned shift in the field and will remain an at-will employee until their nine-month probation period is over.
