County Commissioners Make Holiday Donations

Bernalillo County commissioners have each donated $6,500 from their district funds to help those experiencing homelessness totaling $32,500 for local nonprofits.

The county identified four organizations who help to feed, clothe, and house families who are experiencing difficult times and are in need of assistance.

Donations have been made to Roadrunner Food Bank, S.A.F.E. House, Barrett House, and the wellness hotel through Locker #505. The wellness hotel is a temporary housing initiative between Bernalillo County, the State of New Mexico, and the City of Albuquerque providing shelter to coronavirus (COVID-19)-negative families who are experiencing homelessness.

“Our wonderful commissioners work every day to help all residents of the county,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “But in these challenging times and as a holiday gesture, the commissioners have gone above and beyond to assist our community with a gift that serves the needs of one of the underserved populations.”

The monetary distributions are as follows:

  • Roadrunner Food Bank $12,500
  • Locker #505 $12,625
  • S.A.F.E. House $ 4,875
  • Barrett House $ 2,500

Roadrunner Food Bank is a food distribution hub providing affiliated food pantries, soup kitchen, shelter and regional food banks.

Locker #505 is a clothing bank that has a student-focused facility where children can get clothing.

S.A.F.E. House is an emergency shelter that assists and empowers survivors of intimate partner domestic violence.

Barrett House is a shelter that provides housing and services for women and children who are experiencing homelessness.

Along with the monetary donations, Bernalillo County is also providing case management services to the families living at the wellness hotel. Those services include behavioral health, physical health and dental care assistance, as needed.

“The county has used CARES funding during the pandemic to assist business owners and those who have fallen behind on their rents,” adds County Manager Baca. “The county’s mission to help all residents will continue as we push through a difficult 2020 and into what is promising to be a brighter 2021.”

The Bernalillo County commissioners, county manager, and all county staff send warm and happy greetings for a safe holiday.
