April 2019 Recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month by BernCo Commission

    04/23/2019

The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognizes April 2019 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and calls upon all citizens to increase their participation and support of the community’s efforts to keep children safe, happy, and healthy.

All children deserve to grow up in a safe, stable, and caring environment, with the support and services they need to thrive and succeed in life.

Research shows that child abuse and neglect change the child’s brain architecture and that the effects of child abuse and neglect can last a lifetime.

Last year in New Mexico there were more than 6,400 substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect, with nearly 2,000 of those cases occurring in Bernalillo County.

New Mexico state Senator Michael Padilla sponsored, and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed, a bill creating a new cabinet level department in New Mexico; the Early Childhood Education and Care Department.

Senator Padilla is a long-time advocate of supporting legislation to reform and improve child welfare services offered by the state’s Children Youth and Families Department.

Child abuse and neglect are 100 percent preventable, and April is recognized nationally as a time to celebrate children and the many collaborative programs in Bernalillo County designed to serve children and the betterment of their lives.

CHI St. Joseph’s Children is a local nonprofit provider offering free prenatal to early childhood home visiting services for children and families in need of instruction, information and child development support, along with case management referrals to additional resources.
