BernCo's Animal Care and Resource Center

Animal Shelter Rendering
The new BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays with adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center will be closed on Sundays, Mondays and all Bernalillo County holidays.

On Sept. 25, the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Community School Partnership will be featured at a Congressional briefing at the United States Capitol in Washington D.C sponsored by Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown. ABC Community School Partnership manager Deanna Creighton Cook will be part of a panel speaking about the findings of a new return on investment report that shows a $7.11 financial return on investment for every dollar invested in a community school coordinator. That is $7.11 of direct benefits in the form of actual grant dollars, volunteer hours, professional time, programs and in-kind services such as materials, supplies and other physical donations – all provided to students, families and communities at no cost to a school district.

Bernalillo County is soliciting bids from general contractors for construction services for the Tiny Home Village and the Albuquerque Indian Center Project. The Tiny Home Village pilot project will help to fill the gaps of transitional housing that is currently lacking in the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
On September 24, 2019, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day with a massive 50-state effort to register voters. Sadly, every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they have not registered or forgot to update their voter registration. People move, change their name and simply forget to update their voter registration.

Bernalillo County commission chair Maggie Hart Stebbins would like to invite you to her next monthly neighborhood luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from noon-1 p.m. at McKinley Community Center, 3401 Monroe NE. The speakers will be Kyle Hartsock, Chief Investigator-Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office, Kyle Woods, Deputy-Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, and Bryce Pittenger, State of New Mexico-Children, Youth & Families. They will talk about child exploitation, the BernCo Sheriff’s Office Ghost Unit and Youth Transitional Living (YTL) services.

The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services administers over 20 different programs within the community, aimed at improving behavioral health outcomes. Peanut Butter & Jelly (PB&J) Family Services is one of the providers working to reduce Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). PB&J is working daily to provide wrap-around support to vulnerable families in order to end multi-generational cycles of child abuse and neglect, incarceration, and poverty.

Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue, under the leadership of Fire Chief Greg Perez, is working to achieve the highest level of professionalism and efficiency on behalf of those it serves. Recently, the department began an international accreditation process facilitated by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).

On Aug. 20 the BernCo Commission approved a paid time off ordinance that will mandate business owners in the unincorporated areas of the county, with two or more employees, to provide paid leave. The ordinance will take effect on July 1, 2020.

South Valley MainStreet and Bernalillo County host La Familia Growers’ Market every Friday, at 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, 100 Isleta Boulevard SW. The La Familia Growers’ Market at Dolores Huerta Park returns for its sixth year. Local growers and independent artisans will be offering their fresh and unique creations each week.

On September 19, 2019, Bernalillo County laid to rest 80 unclaimed and indigent residents at a community memorial burial service. Bernalillo County administers the Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program for deceased persons who have passed away within the geographical boundaries of Bernalillo County.
The Behavioral Health Initiative, working with the Planning and Development Services Department created an App that will help track "Sharps" needles that have been either discarded or placed in drop boxes located around the City and the County. This is a collaborative effort that includes the County, the City of Albuquerque, local neighborhood groups including the Bernalillo County Health Council and the State of New Mexico.

Did you know Bernalillo County has instituted a ban on the use of glyphosate? County efforts to maintain weed growth include large-scale machine mowing and the traditional hand tools and pulling methods.
Residents need to be aware that weed growth on their own property, including the setback area (that portion of public land along the road between the private property line and the curb or pavement that is driven by automotive traffic, Bernalillo County Code Section 66-225 (c)), needs to be maintained by the residents themselves.

Lobo Little League in Albuquerque is the only little league in the State of New Mexico that hosts "Challenger Baseball,"an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. The program was recently honored by Bernalillo County Commission. In the Challenger Division, coaches, parents, and volunteers from across Bernalillo County devote countless hours to giving children with all levels of ability the opportunity to play youth baseball on a real team.
