Bernalillo County - Bernalillo County Assessor Tanya R. Giddings and the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services (NMDVS) continue to hold monthly outreaches for New Mexico’s veterans to receive their tax-exemption certificates, which can be applied toward a qualifying veteran’s property, for tax-saving purposes.

The veteran outreach kicked off in December of 2019, and Feb. 20 will be the third installment of this year’s scheduled outreaches with the NMDVS. The last outreach will be held on April 23, to ensure property owners can apply for their veteran property tax exemptions with the county Assessor’s Office, no later than 30 days after the mailing of the notice of value statements.

There are two veteran property tax exemptions available. Any veteran who served a minimum of 90 consecutive active duty days (other than training), and who was honorably discharged, and is a legal resident of New Mexico, can qualify for a $4,000 reduction in the taxable value of their real property for taxation purposes. This benefit is also available to unremarried surviving spouses of veterans.

There is also a 100% disabled veteran property tax exemption available to any veteran who has been determined to have a 100% total and permanent service-connected disability by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and who is a legal resident of New Mexico. This exemption grants a 100% property tax waiver on the veteran’s primary residence, and the veteran will need to present his or her award letter from the Veterans Administration to be eligible for the 100% benefit.

The veteran outreach events will be held at the Assessor’s Office (501 Tijeras Ave. NW Albuquerque, NM 87102) from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Please visit the Assessor’s website for additional information. Applications are available at Bernalillo County Assessor website or visit the NMDVS website.
