Stephen Chavez, BernCo Recreation Coordinator, Recognized

At its Feb. 12 administrative meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners and County Manager Julie Morgas Baca recognized Stephen Chavez for his quick and professional response to a medical emergency at Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center. Stephen is a recreation coordinator who has worked for Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation since 2007.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, Stephen was informed that an adult participant in a class at the center had fainted. Stephen called 911, and while he was on the phone with the Emergency Communications operator, another class participant alerted Stephen that the man was not breathing and had no pulse. Another gentleman from the class began CPR. Stephen updated the operator with this new information and then grabbed the automated external defibrillator (AED), a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. Stephen used the defibrillator on the man while waiting for paramedics to arrive and take over.

Thankfully, Stephen knew what to do, because of the AED training he had received from Bernalillo County and CNM. He acted quickly and professionally until Bernalillo County paramedics arrived and stabilized the gentleman who is now recovering from the heart attack he suffered.

Thank you, Stephen Chavez, for your outstanding response during this medical emergency.
