    Location and Hours

Address: 6001 Beck Road SW (South Valley)

Hours of Operation: The trail is open from dawn to dusk throughout the year.

Contact: Bernalillo County Open Space staff, 505-314-0400 or OpenSpace@bernco.gov

The Pajarito Open Space (Pajarito) is comprised of 20 acres of South Valley farmland purchased in three phases in 1999, 2009 and 2011.

Pajarito is located at the southwest corner of Beck Rd. and Don Felipe Rd. The property was owned by the Beck family for many years and was a small family dairy farm with surrounding alfalfa fields. The property is surrounded by a mix of agricultural and residential development.

    Planning and Management

Planning for this property was conducted through a contract with the Allan Savory Center for Holistic Resource Management (HRM). Bernalillo County Open Space and HRM developed conceptual site plans for public use, access, and continued agricultural activity. The planning team identified compatible passive recreation uses with additional amenities for improving wildlife viewing and migratory fowl habitat. Subsequent farming contracts require that 25 percent of the crops remain unharvested for wildlife and migratory fowl at the end of the growing season.

Between 2004 and 2006, Pajarito was leveled and planted in row crops by a local farmer. Since 2007 alfalfa has been grown and harvested for dairy cattle feed, in addition to a variety of grasses being grown for wildlife forage. In 2009, a .65-mile trail surrounding the southernmost field and outdoor furnishings were constructed and installed by Bernalillo County. In 2011, this trail was extended by .4 miles around all fields. This trail is part of the Prescription Trails program. Pajarito is also an excellent place for bird watching and offers scenic views of the west mesa.

    Current Projects

Bernalillo County recently installed additional furnishings including a shade structure, picnic table and benches. Additionally, Open Space worked with the Pajarito Neighborhood Association to develop and install four interpretive signs with the overarching theme, "A Changing Landscape". The signs focus on change over time in the Middle Rio Grande as it pertains to the history of human settlements, agriculture, vegetation and wildlife. Finally, Open Space with the help of the neighboring community and volunteers, planted native shrubs and trees for wildlife in the newly acquired .9-acre tract that provides pedestrian access to the property from Pajarito Road.
