Open Space Recognized by BernCo Board of Commissioners

05/08/2018

At its May 8 administrative meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners conveyed its sincere gratitude to Open Space on its success and dedication to the people of this great county on this, the 20th anniversary of Bernalillo County Open Space. The Commissioners acknowledge the hard work and experience of the Open Space staff and their dedication to the citizens and the lands of Bernalillo County.

Bernalillo County Open Space strives to be a dynamic network of properties with important natural or cultural resources managed to benefit people, plants and wildlife by protecting and enhancing viewsheds, water resources, wildlife habitat, cultural/historic sites, and prime agricultural land. It also provides resource-based recreation and environmental education.

In 1998, voters in Bernalillo County passed a referendum to provide .5 mill levy funds for the acquisition of Open Space lands. Shortly afterwards, the first Open Space properties, Ojito de San Antonio, Durand, Pajarito, and Sabino Canyon, were purchased in 1999. In 2014, the community showed its widespread support for Open Space, once again, by approving a .2 mill levy for 15 years.

More than 675,000 residents of Bernalillo County have access to the 17 open space properties and the program offerings to include Grow the Growers, Backyard Farming, East Mountain Interpretive Series, and the nationally recognized Master Naturalist programs, to name a few.
