Animal Care Services

Bernalillo County Animal Care Services is excited to enter this brand new world of animal welfare with the opening of our Animal Care and Resource Center!

On Jan. 14, 2019, we extended our services to offer adoptions to the residents of Bernalillo County.

We are an open admission animal shelter, so we can never be certain exactly what animals we will have available for adoption on any given day, so please, if you don’t find the companion animal you are looking for right away, check back often!

Our new Animal Care and Resource Center is located at 3001 2nd St. SW.

Temporary Closure Due to Health Emergency

Beginning Saturday March 21, the Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center will close to the public, and will have some appointment-based services available. This closure complies with social distancing standards in place due to COVID-19 coronavirus.

“Bernalillo County Animal Care Services wishes to thank the public for their continued support during this time. We appreciate those of you who have donated, adopted and fostered in support of our animals and mission,” says BernCo Animal Care Services Director Misha Goodman. “Animals in our care are continuing to receive the best care possible including daily exercise and enrichment.”

The following changes apply during this temporary closure.

Stray animals – the center will only accept emergency intake of stray animals that are sick, injured or pose a risk to public health and safety. For assistance regarding a stray animal, please call 505-468-PETS (7387).

Individuals who find a stray pet that does not fit the above stated emergency criteria are encouraged to do the following:

Maintain the animal while attempting to locate the animal’s owner

Post the found animal on Pawboost.com

Report the animal to BernCo Animal Care Services by calling 505-468-PETS (7387) or sending an email to animal@bernco.gov so the county can promote through its social media outlets

Have the animal scanned for a microchip at a local veterinarian or animal sheltering location

Animal Care Service officers will continue to handle high priority calls for service. To report an animal issue or concern call 505-468-PETS (7387)

Owners should continue to maintain their animals securely at home. Owners considering relinquishment of animals must call 505-468-PETS (7387) to speak to a staff member.

Adoptions will be by appointment only. View the center’s available animals at Adopt-a-Pet.com. To set an appointment to see a specific animal, contact alommasson@bernco.gov or call 505-269-3036

Citizens who wish to donate to the animals and the county’s animal care programming may make a donation at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/1441157?uniqueID=634466775676697665

Due to the large numbers of animals in the facility, citizens who are interested in temporarily fostering an animal are encouraged to contact jhewitt@bernco.gov or 505-269-3877

Lost Animals - If a citizen has lost their animal, they should contact animal@bernco.gov to report. Post lost signs in immediate and surrounding neighborhoods and on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor and Pawboost.com

Reclaim Lost Pets – to see if a pet owner’s animal is at a sheltering location, go to Petharbor.com. If a pet owner believes their animal is at the Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center, please call 505-468-PETS (7387) to set up an appointment to reclaim the animal.
