BernCo News Release: BernCo Facilitates Gun Safety Dialogue

12/04/2018

County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada and Vice Chair Lonnie Talbert hosted a group of representatives from public safety, behavioral health, education, gun owners, gun rights advocates and victims of gun violence at the Hiland Theater today to begin a gun safety dialogue.

The gathering of this focus group was the outcome of discussions at the June 26, 2018 meeting of the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners, where a bipartisan proclamation was read, calling upon the county to initiate a gun safety dialogue.

Some participants at the dialogue session made public comment at the June 26 commission meeting and expressed interest in being part of a broader discussion on gun safety. They, along with public safety, behavioral health, and education representatives were part of this by-invitation-only group to begin this important work.

“We brought some really great community members together to have a dialogue about something that we cannot afford to forget,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada. “We’ve got to figure out a way to compromise to move forward to put responsibility not only on gun owners but on the community as well.”

"To all those who participated today, thank you for the respectful dialogue, and thank you for making responsible gun ownership an important topic that we should talk about openly and honestly,” says Vice Chair Lonnie Talbert.

There are two more by-invitation-only dialogues that will occur in early 2019 with times and locations still to be determined. If anyone would like to be a part of those dialogues, email deputycountymgr_communityservices@bernco.gov with your interests on the topic and contact information.
