BernCo Board Declares May to Be Mental Health Awareness Month

05/08/2018

The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize May 2018 as Mental Health Awareness Month.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Bernalillo County recognizes that mental health support and services are essential to the community’s overall health and well-being.

An estimated 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year; approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—9.8 million, or 4.0%—experiences a serious mental illness that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activity; and approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during his or her life.

There is credible research that supports specific tools all Americans can use to better handle challenges, and protect their health and well-being; thus, Bernalillo County seeks to provide options through the Behavioral Health Initiative.

Mental illnesses are real and prevalent in our nation.

We have far too often witnessed the tragic consequences of untreated mental illness in our community from substance abuse to homelessness and incarceration.

We seek to provide our community with improved outcomes and to change lives through a regional behavioral health care system.

With early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental illnesses can recover and lead full, productive lives.

Each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, organization and citizen shares the burden of mental illnesses and has a responsibility to promote hope, mental wellness and support prevention efforts.
