pyskoty swearing-in
A ceremonial swearing-in was held on Friday, Dec. 7 for newly-elected County Commissioner, Charlene E. Pyskoty (Peh-skoh’-tee) as the newest member of the Board of County Commissioners. Commissioner Pyskoty is a mental health therapist in private practice in Albuquerque and is a resident of Tijeras in the East Mountains. Before becoming a commissioner, Pyskoty served on the Bernalillo County DWI Planning Council and the New Mexico Counselors Association. Commissioner Pyskoty will be officially sworn-in on Jan. 1, 2019.

County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada and Vice Chair Lonnie Talbert hosted a group of representatives from public safety, behavioral health, education, gun owners, gun rights advocates and victims of gun violence at the Hiland Theater on Dec. 4, 2018 to begin a gun safety dialogue.

BernCo Public Works Division invites the community to an open house to discuss the Atrisco Vista Boulevard Corridor Study. The Atrisco Vista Boulevard Corridor project is a planning, engineering, and environmental study to examine potential routes to extend Atrisco Vista Boulevard north to Southern Boulevard in Sandoval County. The public open house will be held, Wednesday, Dec. 5 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Paradise Hills Community Center, 5901 Paradise Blvd. NW.

Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins hosted an Artist’s Reception for the new District 3 Art Exhibit, FINDING FOCUS two, on Thursday, Nov. 29. This show is the 48th in a series of exhibits showcasing the talent and creativity of Bernalillo County artists. The artists in this exhibit are participants in a Bernalillo County program where they learn the techniques of photography while exploring open spaces and historical sites throughout the area. The Albuquerque City Council, at its Nov. 19 council meeting, voted 2-7 against adding the Albuquerque Public School District to the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Government Commission. Bernalillo County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada would like the council to reconsider that action.

On Dec. 11, 2018, the MDC Recruiting Team is hosting “Hiring Heroes,” a public safety-oriented career fair, at the Paradise Hills Community Center from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Various Federal, State and local government agencies will also be participating. The Bernalillo County Arts Board, Blake Road Neighborhood Association and South Valley Academy solicit a call for artists to submit qualifications to lead a group of youth artists in a mural project.

On Nov. 14, 2018, BernCo Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada and the Bernalillo County Arts Board held a ribbon-cutting of “Vecinos,” a sculpture by Mark Horst and Working Classroom at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park. The profiles of the 10 South Valley citizens featured in the sculpture will be repainted in a different color scheme up to twice a year.
